Boone, whose family holds a significant place in the history of Holland. John’s grandfather, P.F. Phanstiehl, was a close friend and associate of Reverend Dr. Albertus Van Raalte, the founder of Holland, Michigan, in 1846. In the early days, P.F. Phanstiehl played a crucial role in supporting the new colony, helping to finance it after a series of disasters affected the settlers. Upon Van Raalte’s invitation, he settled in Holland and established its first tannery.
In 1867, Phanstiehl opened the City Hotel beside his general store, which is now the site of Readers World Bookstore. He later expanded his investments to include a schooner, a dock, and a stagecoach line that transported mail between Grand Haven and Kalamazoo. Before the Great Fire of 1871, Phanstiehl was among Holland’s most prominent merchants.
Hermanus Boone, John H. Boone’s father, married Helena Phanstiehl, the daughter of P.F. Phanstiehl, in a ceremony led by Van Raalte himself. Hermanus was known as a horse trader and hotel owner and was co-owner of the Lizzie Walsh, a steamer that provided transport for hotel guests along Black Lake (now Lake Macatawa). The Boone family owned and managed the City Hotel several times before eventually selling it in 1923 to August Landwehr, co-founder of The Holland Furnace Company. The hotel was demolished in 1924, making way for the impressive Warm Friend Tavern, which remains a landmark to this day.
John H. Boone became one of the earliest developers of home sites along the Lake Michigan shoreline, maintaining a summer residence on a large parcel north of Riley Street along Lakeshore. He also played an important role in the development of Eagle Crest and Clearwater Beach, located north of Port Sheldon.
